Elsie Mayer was born into the aristocratic Spitzer family of Gyor, Hungary. She was raised in a home which instilled in her a great appreciation for the arts.
After surviving the horrors of the Holocaust, she moved to Israel and met her husband Gustav Mayer. There she studied art and pottery from some of Israel’s greatest artists. She came to appreciate their works and incorporated their styles in her own creations.
After moving to America in the 60’s to join her family, Elsie continued her work in both watercolor and mosaics, and became a noted artist.
Elsie lived a long and rich life in Boro Park outliving her only daughter Aviva. Although she didn’t leave any descendants she was a beloved aunt to her many nieces and nephews, instilling in them a love for the beauty of God’s world.
In 2023 at 103 years, Elsie passed away leaving us with the most beautiful memories. With much love and admiration, we opened The Elsie Mayer Gallery in her memory in order to share the appreciation of art onto others.
It is our hope to continue her legacy by inspiring others to appreciate the beauty and depth of art.
